Tikkie continues to gain popularity: ABN AMRO’s payment app handled 157 million payment requests in 2024 for a total of 7.4 billion euros. It set records for both the number of requests and the total amount handled, up by 8 percent and breaking last year’s record of 6.6 billion euros. Since Tikkie was first launched in 2016, the app has been used to pay more than 32.6 billion euros. The Dutch send Tikkies for groceries and lunch, but they also sent more than a million requests for less than 1 euro – mostly to pay for toilets on King’s Day.

10 million users

Earlier this year, Tikkie passed the milestone of 10 million users. The year’s busiest day for Tikkie was Friday, 24 May, when 648,000 Tikkies were paid – that’s 7.5 Tikkies per second. It is hard to pinpoint a particular reason for why so many Tikkies were sent that Friday in May, with the five most-used descriptions including such standards as ‘dinner’ and ‘groceries’. However, most Tikkie payments come near the end of the month, when people have been paid their salaries. On top of this, most people were paid their holiday allowance in May. Nice weather also often means more Tikkies. This year, 14 June stood out, mostly for the number of payment requests sent for UEFA Cup sweepstakes. King’s Day was another big one, with numerous Tikkies for toilets, food and beer.

Groceries, padel and toilets

People in the Netherlands mostly use Tikkie to share the costs of dinners, groceries and lunches, which are the three most common descriptions given for Tikkies. A remarkable newcomer this year is padel – an up-and-coming sport that is very popular in the Netherlands. It is also becoming more and more common to share the costs of streaming services. Tikkies for less than 1 euro also go out in huge numbers: mostly for food and drinks, but also for the cost of using a toilet – in particular on King’s Day – which are charged at less than 1 euro.

Groepie and bottle deposit Tikkies on the rise

Groepie – a function for friends and family to track group spending during holidays and weekend breaks – doubled in terms of not only users in 2024, but also the number of Groepies. The most popular destinations that Groepie is used for are skiing trips, Antwerp, Valencia, Paris and Berlin. The feature that was introduced in 2023 to use Tikkie to refund deposits on reusable bottles also saw a huge increase this year. Tikkie’s Head of Marketing Moreno Kensmil explains, “A million people have already received direct refunds on their bottle deposits via Tikkie. More and more places around the Netherlands have deposit return machines with Tikkie QR codes, including at schools and railway stations, near fast food outlets and in garden centres. This makes it easier for people to return their reusable containers and get their money back quickly, while at the same time helping to keep the world around them clean.”

Fast payments for both consumers and business clients

Consumers have embraced Tikkie as a quick and easy way to share costs. The brand is also making progress in the business arena. From beauty parlours to driving schools to restaurants, all kinds of entrepreneurs are using Tikkie’s business feature to bill their customers. As with consumers, business Tikkies are paid extremely quickly: 81 percent are paid within a day.

Overall, Moreno Kensmil is pleased about 2024: “Eight years ago, when we launched Tikkie, we could never have dreamed that Tikkie would become such a feature of life in the Netherlands. We’re incredibly proud of the record amount of 7.4 billion euros paid via Tikkie in 2024, and how much trust so many people have in us. We look forward to continuing to make our users happy in 2025.”
