Feeling confident in the workplace: “I am who I want to be and I wear what I want to wear”
Allan can truly be himself at the bank. Working from home has encouraged him to be himself even more and to speak out. “I always paint my fingernails on one hand, because that hand is clearly visible during Teams meetings.” He makes no secret of it: “I’m gay and I love it.” Listen to the podcast above (in Dutch only).
With the ‘Feeling confident in the workplace’ campaign, we provide a stage for our employees who have had to break through barriers just to be themselves. As part of Pride Week, we start the series with our LGBTI+ employees.
In this podcast, we talk to our colleague Allan. Allan works as a People & Culture business consultant, mapping out the learning needs of colleagues and activating cultural change within the organisation.
What does feeling safe and free to be yourself at work mean for Allan? “When you try to be someone else, you feel unsure of yourself. To me, feeling self-confident means that I can really be myself, through and through,” Allan replies.
No matter what
Daring to be yourself and being proud of who you are, that is the essence of self-confidence. At ABN AMRO, we have been promoting a working environment where everyone can bethemselves and feel safe and comfortable, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
In the series ‘Feeling confident in the workplace’ we talk with employees about being yourself at work and feeling safe in doing so. As part of Pride Week, we start the series with our LGBTI+ employees.

We think it’s important for our organisation to reflect the level of diversity in society, because we strengthen each other in this way. This feeds through in everything: in equal opportunities, talented people, innovative products and services and meaningful relationships. With our customers obviously, but with our employees too.
