IIn 2020, ABN AMRO introduced a payment deferment arrangement that many of our commercial clients chose to use. Under this arrangement, companies were given a 6-month break from paying interest (and making repayments), which they would then pay off later. The idea was to give companies more financial peace of mind during the period of uncertainty when the Covid-19 pandemic first broke out.

Clients with commercial loans could choose to pay off the deferred interest and repayment obligations from 2020 either when the loan matured, or else earlier if the client wished. By now 61% of the deferred amounts on commercial loans have been paid off, based on either of these possibilities.

For commercial clients with a commercial overdraft, i.e. a payment account with a credit limit, the deferred interest and fees would be collected at the end of December 2021. Since these amounts do not include any deferred repayments, they are relatively minor. For three quarters of the clients the amount is less than 1000 euros, with an average amount due of 1500 euros.

Dedicated webpage

The pandemic is proving persistent, however, and it is impossible to predict how the situation will develop or what measures the government will take to repress the coronavirus. With this in mind, ABN AMRO has set up a dedicated webpage with information about the arrangements for the payment deferment and their conclusion. A key element of the webpage is a button that clients can click to indicate that they are presently unable to make the repayments or that they need additional financial assistance. Using this information, we can consider what we can do to help struggling companies, even as the circumstances continue to evolve. At the same time, clients that have built up sufficient reserves over the past year can now pay off the deferred interest and fees according to the original arrangements and end this support. We have informed commercial clients about this already, and later this week another letter will go out with further details about the payment collection in mid-December.
