DDoS: Explanation and background

Several banks and other institutions have been targeted by DDoS attacks, including ABN AMRO. The bank is well-protected against these attacks, but one did briefly disrupt the bank’s systems and on 18 April, clients were unable to use Internet Banking, Mobile Banking or iDEAL for half an hour. A DDoS attack is not the same as hacking as it doesn’t endanger client data. So what is a DDoS attack and what does ABN AMRO do to prevent them?
DDoS
DDoS stands for DistributedDenial of Service. During a DDoS attack, cybercriminals shut down websites by flooding them with requests. One way they do this is by channelling the requests through unprotected computers abroad. Flooding the website with requests creates a ‘traffic jam’ on the network, or it can overflow the server memory buffers. ABN AMRO always reports DDoS attacks.
