Circl wins ULI Europe sustainability award

Circl has won the European Urban Land Institute Award. ABN AMRO’s sustainable pavilion was hailed by judges for delivering on the innovative principles of the circular economy. The fact that a ‘small’ building such as Circl won out over the other finalists – the Fenix project, involving 214 apartments and a public function based around a former warehouse in Rotterdam, and a project called Victoria Yards Johannesburg – shows that size is not important here.
The winning project was selected on the basis of several different factors. According to the judges, Circl has succeeded, as a ‘first mover’, in bringing together a wide array of sustainable elements in a new movement in the real estate sector.
ABN AMRO Construction & Real Estate sector banker Petran van Heel comments, “We’re incredibly proud to have won this award. It shows that we’re on the right track. I also think that the accolade serves to encourage everyone to keep pushing the boundaries to create better and healthier buildings and reduce carbon emissions. In that sense, it isn’t so much a recognition of a past achievement, but of what still needs to be done.”
Those were also the factors that the judges considered:
“In this new sustainable approach, the building is a true inspiration and continues to engage and educate the wider community, both nationally and internationally, paving the way for more sustainable projects, and maybe more importantly, promoting more corporate social responsibility in the real estate industry.”
By winning the ULI Europe Awards for Excellence 2020, Circl automatically becomes a contender for the 2021 ULI Global Awards for Excellence. ULI will announce the winners of the Global Award in the autumn of 2021. If Circl is among the winners again, it will be announced on our website.
