On 29 November, ABN AMRO was awarded the 2022 Crystal Prize (Kristalprijs) by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy for its transparent reporting about human rights. Chief Risk Officer Tanja Cuppen accepted the prize on behalf of the bank during the presentation in Amersfoort.

This year’s theme was ‘transparency about the impact of, and on human rights in the face of global challenges’. ABN AMRO was the first financial institution in the world to publish a human rights report, in 2016, and is one of the trailblazers in this area.

Tanja Cuppen: “The S (Social) in ESG is extremely important and is becoming ever more pressing given all the global challenges we face. We must remain alert at all times to vulnerable groups that are linked to the bank’s activities and our clients and examine how we can contribute to improving their situation. We started reporting on human rights and the dilemmas involved quite a few years ago. This award is recognition of the importance of transparent reporting. It will encourage our organisation and our colleagues to keep a sharp eye out for social issues that affect the bank and to fulfil our responsibility to act and report on these issues.”

ABN AMRO wants to communicate about human rights challenges and opportunities as transparently as possible and does so annually in several publications, including its Human Rights Report and Social Impact & Human Rights Update. These reports show what has been achieved, which dilemmas the bank faces and where and how things can be improved.

The Crystal Prize and the Transparency Benchmark

The Crystal Prize is awarded in even years based on voluntary nominations for transparent reporting about specific themes. All organisations that will fall under the scope of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) were invited to submit their nomination by 31 July 2022. In odd years, the award is based on the Transparency Benchmark, a bi-annual survey by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and the Royal Netherlands Institute of Chartered Accountants (NBA) into the transparency of CSR reporting by Dutch companies.
