International Women’s Day 2025 – Meet Zeynep Vredenburg

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we’re shining a spotlight on five of our incredible colleagues. In this series of profile interviews, we celebrate their achievements, gain their insights as women in the banking and finance industry, and ask them what this year’s theme #Accelerate Action means to them.
"International Women's Day 2025 serves as a vital reminder of the progress we've made, and the work still ahead, in achieving gender equality. ABN AMRO is committed to empowering women at every level, recognising that diverse perspectives drive innovation and success. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of our colleagues, and women worldwide, and reaffirm our dedication to creating an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to excel. Together, we can continue to break barriers and build a future where equality is the norm, not the exception." Gerben Dragt, UK Country Executive, ABN AMRO
Today, we speak with Zeynep Vredenburg, Executive Director, Corporate Lending UK&I
What inspired you to pursue a career in finance?
Growing up in an international environment, with both Dutch and Turkish roots, diverse perspectives and global environments always appealed to me. The world of finance is constantly evolving on various axes (for example, digital, AI and regulatory), is deeply connected to the world stage, and offers many opportunities to make a bigger impact. This sense of movement, complexity and changing responsibilities motivated me to pursue a career in finance and has kept me engaged ever since. Additionally, ABN AMRO has provided me with multiple opportunities that have enabled me to continuously learn and grow.
What does this year’s theme #Accelerate Action mean to you?
The theme calls for urgency, inclusion, and transformative change. It signals equality can’t wait. Even though we see a general change in the industry the pace is still too slow and there are still inequalities on several fronts for example, with the gender pay gap. For me the theme means a push from awareness to real change, it calls for action and delivering on targets instead of just talking about it, which I believe is needed. I am proud that ABN AMRO has women on its executive board and will soon become the first major bank in the Netherlands to appoint a female CEO.
How do you think the finance sector can attract more female talent?
I believe that having female role models is crucial for attracting more women to the finance sector. It’s not just about encouraging women to enter the field, but also demonstrating that there are ample opportunities to thrive and lead. Women in senior roles, whether in leadership, specialist roles or other decision-making capacities, serve as powerful examples. Their success stories are fundamental in inspiring both current and next generations.
Another key element is how we perceive talent and skills in our industry. We need a transformational shift that recognises the diverse range of capabilities women bring to the table. A broader, more inclusive definition of talent will not only attract more female talent but will also benefit the industry as a whole. It's important to note that men play an essential role in this shift as well as strong allies in fostering a more inclusive workplace. Their support in breaking down the barriers that still exist can make a significant difference in how we reshape the financial industry.
What advice would you give others looking to start a career in finance?
My most important piece of advice would be to stay true to yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in the expectations or pressures of any dynamic work environment, but authenticity is key to long-term success and satisfaction. In the finance sector, like any other field, it’s tempting to mimic others in order to be successful or fit in. It is important to remember that staying aligned with your own values and staying grounded in your own path and beliefs, will guide you through tough decisions and help you maintain your passion over the long-term.
