Our history

The local roots of ABN AMRO go back more than 150 years. Today's ABN AMRO was created from a merger with Fortis Bank Nederland in July 2010 and offers a full range of products and services to retail, private, commercial and merchant banking clients.

We build long-term, sustainable relationships with our clients in order to best serve their interests and are continuously strengthening our moderate risk profile. We have a sound balance sheet, limited trading and investment activities and a good capital and liquidity position. We have a strong presence in the Netherlands in all our business activities.

Our international growth businesses are Private Banking, Energy, Commodities & Transportation (ECT), Clearing and Asset Based Finance. Headquartered in Amsterdam, ABN AMRO has over 22,000 employees based in 21 countries and territories.

De Twentsche Bank

• A predecessor of ABN AMRO, opened a branch in London as early as 1858 because of its major role in foreign exchange dealing.

1974

• Pierson, Heldring & Pierson was established in the UK. 

1975

• Bank Mees & Hope N.V. opened its branch in London. 

1977

• Amro Bank opened its first branch in London. ABN AMRO Commercial Finance, previously known as Venture Finance PLC, has been a part of ABN AMRO since 1992. 

2007

• The activities of ABN AMRO in the UK were in large part absorbed by The Royal Bank of Scotland as part of a consortium (with i.a. Fortis Bank). 

2010

• ABN AMRO and Fortis Bank Nederland merged and the remaining activities of FBN (Markets and Clearing) were rebranded as ABN AMRO.
