International Women’s Day 2025 – Meet Hayley Spring

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we’re shining a spotlight on five of our incredible colleagues. In this series of profile interviews, we celebrate their achievements, gain their insights as women in the banking and finance industry, and ask them what this year’s theme #Accelerate Action means to them.
"International Women's Day 2025 serves as a vital reminder of the progress we've made, and the work still ahead, in achieving gender equality. ABN AMRO is committed to empowering women at every level, recognising that diverse perspectives drive innovation and success. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of our colleagues, and women worldwide, and reaffirm our dedication to creating an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to excel. Together, we can continue to break barriers and build a future where equality is the norm, not the exception." Gerben Dragt, UK Country Executive, ABN AMRO
Today, we speak with Hayley Spring, Head of Operations, Clearing UK
What does this year’s theme #Accelerate Action mean to you?
To me, accelerating action is about inspiring the next generations of talent to not only seek a career in banking but to be our future leaders. Enthusiasm is contagious so by taking the lead in bringing about curiosity and taking a leap I hope to inspire many others to follow me in doing so.
How do you think the finance and banking sector can attract more female talent?
More interaction with schools and universities where individuals may be unaware of the different facets of, and may feel daunted by the prospect of, banking when really a wide range of skillsets are perfectly suited to it.
I’ve seen an increase in the diversity at ABN AMRO during my time here and can certainly advocate for the benefits. In many ways the most important thing is a willingness and aptitude to learn, regardless of your gender there are lots of opportunities to be had – you’ve just got to have the confidence and self-belief to take them.
What advice would you give others looking to start a career in finance?
Go for it! If you are willing to learn and work hard there are so many opportunities in this space. Always be yourself, it’s important to have mentors and coaches but bringing your true self to a role is the key to it’s success and ultimately a business’ evolution.
What part of your role do you enjoy the most?
I love to learn and that’s something that I still do every single day in my role. Clearing is broad and fast paced, and that keeps my mind challenged which I love. I am also fortunate to work with a truly amazing group of colleagues. There is definitely a culture of being a champion for others at ABN AMRO and this elevates your confidence when taking opportunities. No matter what, there are always others there to support you which really spurs you on.
Have you had any mentors or role models who have inspired you throughout your career?
Whilst at ABN AMRO, I have had the privilege to learn from some of the best people in our industry. Being part of Clearing means that we have access to amazing leaders from across the globe who always take the time to listen and share experiences, no matter which level of seniority you are.
I think it’s also important to mention that some of my greatest role models and allies here are male, which is another a key part of accelerating action. The more of us that invest our time in building a future-proof workforce the more diverse we will ultimately become together.
